About Mojoblog

For those who are wondering, Mojo is a cat. Mojoblog is named after Mojo, as is the domain Chez Mojo which is a reference to an area at the top of the stairs that Mojo calls home. This blog is meant to continue the tradition of the Clot News with the addition of Ryan’s ramblings. Speaking of which, he is constructing a photoblog here:www.chezmojophoto.com which is intended to demonstrate the learning process of photography.

Chez Mojo, c’est une petite partie de chez nous où il se passe plein de trucs sympas. Il y aura la suite de Clot News, ainsi que plein de nouveautés: du bla bla en anglais, des voyages, de la bonne bouffe, pleins de photos, des poils de chat, de la musique qui s’échappe par les petits trous, du pain frais, et du chocolat, poil aux doigts!

Ryan's Photoblog

Vacations are always excellent opportunities to get back in touch with your hobbies--particularly photography--and as such I've been reading a lot about photography again. As with many endeavors, one has to overcome plateaus in order to improve and to remain interested. My newest challenge is to stop and look around, figure out why a scene "feels" picture-worthy, and then try to convey that in a picture. This snow-covered landscape was particularly challenging because, as with most big, open spaces, your first instinct is to go wide-angle and show everything, but this rarely works. In this instance I tried zooming in on plants and finding scenes that included all the textures that made the scene so lovely, but I couldn't convey just how blue the sky looked with the warm light from the low-hanging sun (up at 9, down at 14.30--peaks about 10 degrees off the horizon), fresh snow, and cold, clear air. I think this photo almost does it.

I've come to think of my 18-200 DX lens as a "kit" lens in that it maxes out at f/5.6 on the long end and isn't really sharp below f/7.1 (which prompted me to invest in a 70-200 mm f/2.8). Of course, 18-200 is such a useful zoom range that I usually take it (and my 50 f/1.4) with me when I want to travel light. Well, our trip to Assen was just such an occasion--we were just going to a friend's house for tea--but we wound up going for a little hike in the snow. During the hike we ran into these long-haired cow-looking animals (they look like a cross between a bison and a cow to me) and one really big bull with a stylish ring through is nose. One of the many lessons that I've learned from the Internets is how to extract sharpness from a lens (when sharpness is desirable) and I think I hit it just right wit this one. There is tons of detail in the nose (which I cropped to show the barbed wire and feet) that came through brilliantly in this picture, which I think is my favorite of the day.

If I had known that we were going on a hike I would have packed my macro lens, but as it happens I didn't, so this is what you get.

While tweaking the white balance on these snowy pictures, one of the things I noticed was that either the sky was a brilliant blue and the snow a crisp white, or the completely opposite. I think it had a lot to do with whether I was shooting with the light and if the sun was behind a cloud at that moment. This picture, unfortunately, has blue snow and a white sky, but it shows the colorful layers of grass, trees, and snow.

Here I went for the wide shot to try to show why this clearing was so picturesque, but of course snow is notoriously difficult to photograph because of the necessarily huge dynamic range it brings to a scene. I'm hoping the patterns in the snow make it worth while.

I guess these are like little green houses. I took this from a moving car so I didn't have a lot of time to compose/focus, but I still like the picture.

I dragged my camera all the way to Nantes so I figured I should get a decent picture. I like how the NIR turns water black (with some tweaks of the white balance, of course).

As we were driving to Nantes, a ray of light broke through the clouds and illuminated just the houses in the foreground. The NIR amplified this effect considerably and somehow seems to have created the tilt-shift effect that makes real-life objects looks tiny.
